Red Valley Cappadocia: Sunset, Hiking Routes & Visitor Guide
Red Valley Cappadocia is known for its pink and red rock formations, winding hiking trails, and sunset views. Called Kızılçukur in Turkish, the valley offers two different ways to experience the landscape: watch the changing light from the panoramic viewpoint or follow the paths between the ridges and rock-cut churches.
You do not need to complete a hike to enjoy the sunset. The viewpoint is accessible by car, making it a rewarding final stop after a day of sightseeing. If you want to explore on foot, start earlier and leave time to settle into a good viewing spot before evening.

How Was Red Valley Formed?
Red Valley’s layered slopes are part of Cappadocia’s volcanic landscape. Ash and other volcanic material accumulated over time, forming rock layers that included soft tuff. Water and weathering gradually eroded these layers into valleys, channels, and sculpted formations.
The resulting landscape is full of folds and ridges that catch the light differently throughout the day. Toward evening, longer shadows emphasize their contours, while the warmer light brings out the pink, orange, and red tones.
Where Is Red Valley in Cappadocia?
Red Valley lies in the area between Ortahisar and Çavuşin, close to Göreme. It connects with neighboring valleys, so walking routes can extend beyond Kızılçukur itself.
When planning your visit, distinguish between the Red Valley sunset viewpoint and the hiking trails below it. The viewpoint provides a broad panorama from above; the paths lead into the landscape and connect with other walking routes.
The Red Valley Cappadocia map below shows the sunset viewpoint alongside Şah Saray Cave Suites, helping you plan your journey from Göreme.
You can spend the first part of the day exploring Göreme before heading out for sunset. Our guide to what to do in Göreme includes ideas for the museum, town streets, and nearby sights.
How to Get to Red Valley from Göreme
You can reach the sunset viewpoint by car or taxi. From Şah Saray Cave Suites, allow approximately 15–20 minutes in normal traffic, with extra time as sunset approaches.
Vehicle access and parking at the sunset area are paid. If you travel by taxi, arrange your return journey in advance so you can enjoy the evening without having to organize transport afterward.
For a guided Red Valley tour, check whether the itinerary includes a walk through the valley, a sunset stop, or both. These offer different experiences and require different amounts of time.
If you are hiking independently, choose your starting point and endpoint before setting off. A road route to the viewpoint does not show the distance or terrain of a valley hike.
Things to Do in Red Valley
Watch the Sunset over the Ridges
A Red Valley sunset begins well before the sun disappears. As the light drops, shadows stretch across the slopes and the colors gradually deepen. Arriving 45–60 minutes before sunset gives you time to park, find a comfortable spot, and watch that transition.
The viewing area can become busy in the evening. Bring a folding chair if you are driving, along with water, a flask, and a few snacks. A light extra layer is useful after the sun goes down, even during warmer months.
Leave some flexibility in your evening plans, as vehicles may queue when visitors depart together. Staying a little longer also gives you time to enjoy the softer colors after sunset.

Explore the Red Valley Hiking Trails
Hiking takes you closer to the rock layers, narrow passages, and carved spaces that are difficult to appreciate from the viewpoint alone. Paths near Üzümlü Church lead into the valley, with connections that can extend toward Çavuşin.
A walk continuing toward Çavuşin may cover approximately 4–6 kilometers (2.5–3.7 miles), depending on the paths you choose. This is a route-planning estimate for a longer connected walk, rather than a fixed distance for every Red Valley hike.
Some descents are steep, and loose ground requires care. Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip, carry enough water, and save an offline map before starting. If you leave your vehicle at the beginning of a one-way route, arrange transport back.
Complete the valley section while there is still daylight. For a sunset hike, plan to reach the viewpoint before sunset and return by road afterward.
Combine Red and Rose Valley
Red Valley and Rose Valley are neighboring, connected walking areas, but they are not two names for the same valley. Rose Valley is known locally as Güllüdere, while Red Valley is Kızılçukur.
A combined Red and Rose Valley Cappadocia hike lets you explore more of the landscape, with possible connections through Meskendir. Its length depends on where you start, which branches you follow, and where you finish; there is no single distance that describes every combined route.
Choose a route that fits your available daylight and walking experience. A local guide can be helpful if you want to include specific churches or avoid spending time finding the connecting paths.

Discover Üzümlü Church
Üzümlü Church, also known as Grape Church or St. Niketas Church, adds a historical stop to the valley walk. Carved into a fairy chimney, it is known for its painted interior and floral decoration.
The church and surrounding carved spaces reveal another side of the landscape: these rocks once provided places for worship and everyday life. If seeing the interior is a priority, check access locally before planning your walk around it.
Photograph the Changing Landscape
The viewpoint suits wide panoramic photographs, while the paths offer closer views of textured rock, narrow passages, and layered slopes.
Allow time to watch how the light changes before choosing your composition. A ridge that looks flat at midday can reveal deep folds as shadows lengthen.
