What to Do in Goreme: Top Experiences and a 2-Day Itinerary
Wondering what to do in Goreme? Start with the rock-cut churches of Goreme Open-Air Museum, explore a nearby valley, wander through the town’s stone streets and watch the landscape change at sunset. A hot air balloon flight or a morning watching balloons from the ground can complete the experience, alongside local Anatolian food and a cave hotel stay.
Goreme is a town within Cappadocia, rather than another name for the whole region. This guide separates local sights from trips further afield, with a pinned sightseeing map and practical one- and two-day plans to help you choose.

Best Things to Do in Goreme
Take a Hot Air Balloon Flight over Cappadocia
A balloon flight offers a different perspective on the valleys, with folds in the rock and clusters of fairy chimneys becoming visible from above. It is an early start: pickup, preparation, flying and the return journey take longer than the flight alone.
Try to book for an early morning in your stay, leaving another possible date if weather prevents flying. Rescheduling depends on availability and your booking terms. Confirm pickup with your operator, and avoid placing a tightly timed excursion immediately afterwards. Routes and departures depend on wind, weather and flight authorisation.
Guests at Şah Saray Cave Suites can also ask the hotel to help arrange tours and excursions with vetted partner operators that suit your plans.
Watch the Balloons at Sunrise
Watching from the ground lets you enjoy the morning light without taking a flight. Choose an accessible viewpoint or a hotel terrace you have permission to use, and arrive before sunrise rather than after the sky has brightened.
An elevated position can give a wider view, but balloons do not follow an identical route every day. Ask about the morning’s flight status and likely viewing conditions. A terrace photograph from another traveller does not guarantee the same scene during your visit.
Visit Goreme Open-Air Museum
Goreme Open-Air Museum brings together churches, chapels and communal spaces carved into volcanic rock. Its painted interiors add a historical dimension to a trip otherwise dominated by landscape. The wider area forms part of the Goreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed in 1985.
Allow around two to three hours. Look out for the Dark Church, or Karanlık Kilise, and check its admission arrangements separately. Tokalı Church, also called the Buckle Church, stands outside the main museum entrance, so include it in your approach or return. Follow the photography rules displayed at each church. Our Goreme Open-Air Museum guide introduces the main interiors and visit arrangements.
Explore Goreme’s Streets and Local Shops
Leave time to walk beyond the main road. Stone façades, arched doorways and rock-cut buildings make the smaller streets worth exploring, while the centre provides easy opportunities for tea, coffee and shopping.
Browse ceramics and woven goods, asking where pieces were made if you are looking for locally produced work. Around an hour makes a comfortable introduction, with longer if you stop to eat. Keep to public streets and visitor areas; an attractive courtyard or terrace may belong to a private home or hotel.
Walk Up to Goreme Sunset Point
Goreme Sunset Point, commonly associated with Aşıklar Tepesi, looks across the town and its surrounding rock formations. It is a useful final stop after an afternoon exploring the centre, especially as the light softens over the rooftops.
The approach is uphill, so allow for the climb as well as time at the top. Check the location carefully: Aşıklar Tepesi and Love Valley are different places. The roadside panoramas towards Uchisar are separate stops too. Choose your viewpoint before opening directions.
Try Local Anatolian Food
Make a meal part of your day rather than an interruption between sights. Testi kebabı, usually described as pottery kebab in English, is a familiar regional choice. Mantı, small dumplings commonly served with yoghurt, and warming soups offer other ways to explore Turkish cooking. Ask whether your chosen dish needs advance ordering.
At Şah Saray Cave Suites,Michelin Selected Uzundere Anatolian Restaurant serves Anatolian cuisine in an alcohol-free setting with a halal-certified menu. Visitors can dine here without staying at the hotel. Check the current menu and reserve ahead when planning an evening meal.
Experience a Cave Hotel Stay
Staying in a cave hotel brings Cappadocia’s architecture into the quieter parts of your trip. Beyond the photographs, consider the room’s daylight, layout, access and facilities, particularly if you want time to relax between outings.
At Şah Saray Cave Suites, Cappadocia’s first and only halal-certified cave hotel, cave and stone interiors are paired with contemporary comforts. Its central Goreme location gives terraces overlooking the fairy chimneys, the valleys and the morning balloon flight paths. Depending on the suite, features may include a private pool, jacuzzi or Turkish bath; these are room-specific rather than standard in every room. Explore our cave suites to choose the setting and facilities that suit your stay.
Choose a Valley Walk Near Goreme
One well-chosen walk is more rewarding than rushing through several valleys. Decide whether you want a short out-and-back outing, a longer trail or simply a viewpoint visit. Use the map for orientation, then confirm the actual trail and current access locally.
Love Valley: Viewpoint or Valley Walk?
Love Valley, or Aşk Vadisi, is known for its tall rock pillars. A viewpoint visit gives you the broad panorama; walking into the valley lets you experience the formations from below.
Allow roughly half an hour for an unhurried viewpoint stop, plus transport. A hike requires a separate time allowance and a confirmed entrance and exit. Being dropped at a panorama does not necessarily put you at the start of your intended trail.
Rose Valley and Red Valley: Hiking and Sunset Views
Rose Valley, or Güllüdere, and Red Valley, associated with Kızılçukur, offer changing rock colours, walking routes and viewpoints. They are neighbouring areas with connecting trails, rather than two names for the same place.
Choose a defined route and allow several hours if you want a substantial walk. For sunset alone, arrange access to a viewpoint and your return afterwards. A sunset stop should not leave you navigating an unfamiliar valley path in darkness.
Pigeon Valley: Plan a Walk Towards Uchisar
Pigeon Valley, or Güvercinlik Vadisi, runs between Goreme and Uchisar, with pigeon houses cut into the rock. It suits travellers interested in combining a landscape walk with a visit towards Uchisar.
For a one-way outing, arrange the return journey before starting and leave energy for any castle climb. A shorter option is to explore a suitable section from Goreme and retrace your steps. Roadside overlooks and valley-floor paths provide different experiences; choose the one you intend to visit.
Zemi Valley and Swords Valley: More Walking Options
Zemi Valley suits a longer walking outing, though a shorter return walk near an entrance may fit around a museum visit. El Nazar Church is a possible additional stop in the surrounding area, subject to access and opening arrangements.
Swords Valley, or Kılıçlar Vadisi, offers another option around the museum area. Choose a manageable section rather than adding a full hike after a tiring morning. Compare possible routes in our Cappadocia hiking guide, then check local trail conditions before setting out.
Places to Visit Around Goreme
These sights are outside Goreme town. Group them by direction so that your afternoon is spent exploring rather than repeatedly travelling back through the same area.
Uchisar Castle and Panoramic Viewpoints
Uchisar Castle offers a higher perspective on the surrounding landscape. Its stepped ascent needs a little energy; wandering through Uchisar and choosing a nearby viewpoint is an alternative if you prefer less climbing.
On a vehicle-based outing, combine Uchisar with a panorama stop along the road from Goreme. Keep this as a separate option from the Cavusin and Zelve route rather than trying to fit every sight into one afternoon.
Cavusin, Pasabag and Zelve
Cavusin introduces an older rock settlement, while Pasabag, also called Monks Valley, is known for its capped fairy chimneys. Zelve offers a more extensive landscape of rock-cut settlement spaces and paths.
These stops can form an afternoon excursion, with time for walking and breaks. If you prefer to explore slowly, choose two. Stay within areas open to visitors, particularly around old structures. With additional days, consider pottery in Avanos or an underground-city excursion. Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu are outside Goreme and need their own transport and visit plans.
How to Spend One or Two Days in Goreme
Use these plans as starting points, adapting them to daylight, weather and your walking pace. The map above helps you locate the stops; the itineraries help you decide how much to include.
One Day in Goreme: Museum, Town and Sunset
Start with optional balloon watching, followed by breakfast. Spend the morning at Goreme Open-Air Museum and Tokalı Church, allowing separately for the journey from town. Walking there is possible, but taking a taxi for one leg can preserve energy.
Return for lunch and a proper break. In the afternoon, browse the shops and quieter streets, then head up to Sunset Point before the day ends. Finish with dinner in town. This plan already includes plenty of time on your feet, so there is no need to add a long valley hike.
Two Days in Goreme: Add a Valley Walk or Nearby Sights
Follow the first-day plan, then choose one focus for your second day:
- A walking day: Explore a selected valley route, with time for lunch, photographs and the return journey.
- A sightseeing day: Visit Cavusin, Pasabag and Zelve, or choose the quieter alternative of Uchisar and nearby panoramas.
If you have booked a balloon flight, adapt the morning around the operator’s schedule and leave a recovery break after the early start. Keep some flexibility if an earlier flight was cancelled, without assuming a replacement place will be available.
Practical Tips for Visiting Goreme
Getting to Goreme from the Airport
Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport and Kayseri Airport are both arrival options for a Goreme stay. Plan the onward journey separately from your flight, choosing a pre-booked transfer, taxi or rental car.
For a shared transfer, confirm that your arrival is covered and provide your flight number and accommodation address. Check the meeting point and arrangements for delays. Our Cappadocia airport transfers page explains the available transfer service.
Getting Around Without a Car
Goreme’s centre is walkable, but slopes and uneven surfaces can make short distances more demanding than they appear on a map. The museum journey also adds walking outside the site itself.
For surrounding attractions, taxis and organised tours can simplify transport. If using local buses, check current routes and return departures rather than assuming they serve each valley entrance. For a one-way hike, settle the journey back before you leave.
Planning for Weather, Walking and Balloon Cancellations
Bring shoes with grip, water and sun protection for outdoor days. Layers help with early starts, while wet or wintry conditions can change how suitable a trail is for your group.
If balloons cannot fly, consider the museum, a longer meal or a town walk, depending on conditions. Do not automatically replace a cancelled flight with a hike: the weather may affect both. Leave demanding outdoor plans flexible and confirm conditions on the day.
